Austin All-day Training–Jason Brimhall and Wayne Sheffield


On Friday, Jan. 30, prior to the SQLSaturday event in Austin, Microsoft Certified Masters Wayne Sheffield and Jason Brimhall shared their popular all-day training “Murder They Wrote.”

Jason and Wayne covered:

  • Functions and how all but inline table-valued functions suck performance wise
  • Quick overview of why using table variables can be bad
  • Not using an ORDER BY clause and assuming there will be an order.
  • SARGABLE – what it is, what makes a query be sargable, what breaks it
  • Data type mismatch
  • Data type selection
  • How using IN() or correlated subqueries instead of a join affects performance
  • How ORM tools affect performance by doing almost all of the above


Jason Brimhall has 10+ yrs experience and has worked with SQL Server from 6.5 through SQL 2012. He has experience in performance tuning, high transaction environments, as well as large environments. He is currently a consultant specializing in performance tuning, server analysis and problem resolution. Jason is a Microsoft Certified Master(MCM) in SQL Server and a Microsoft MVP. He is the VP of the Las Vegas User Group (SSSOLV).

Wayne Sheffield, a Microsoft Certified Master in SQL Server, started working with xBase databases in the late 80’s. With over 20 years in IT, he has worked with SQL Server (since 6.5 in the late 90’s) in various dev/admin roles, with an emphasis in performance tuning.
