About SQL Solutions Group
SQL Solutions Group is a small database practice built entirely around SQL Server. We are not another SQL outsourcing shop — we become part of our clients’ technical team, and we treat their data like it is our own.
For most clients we are the database team they never hired: we run their estate day to day, month after month, and we are who they call at 2am. Alongside that we take on scoped project work — migrations, upgrades, availability group builds, performance engagements — across on-prem, Azure and AWS.
The team is senior, fully remote, and small enough that there is no bench and nobody standing between you and the client.
What you Will Actually Do
The work splits two ways, and you will do both every week.
Managed Services
You carry a portfolio of client estates and keep them healthy.
- Own those environments over years, not engagements. You will know them better than the clients do, and they will call you first.
- Rotate through ticket triage and on-call. Outages do not respect business hours, and neither does this role.
- Tune the monitoring so it tells the truth — writing and refining alert rules, cutting noise, making sure the alerts that fire are worth waking up for.
- Spot the problem before the client does, and say so. Proactive recommendations are the point of a managed service; queue-clearing is not.
- Keep the records straight — tickets, time, and notes a colleague can pick up cold.
Projects
- Scope the work before you do it: assess an environment, estimate the effort, and write a scope a client will sign and you can then deliver against.
- Run migrations and upgrades: plan them, write the runbook, execute the cutover.
- Diagnose performance problems properly: execution plans, indexing, query tuning, configuration — and make the call on what actually fixes it.
- Design and troubleshoot high availability: Always On availability groups, failover cluster instances, log shipping, replication — and the Kerberos, SPN, and delegation problems that come with them.
- Work directly with clients: status calls, recommendations, and sometimes telling someone their plan is a bad idea.
What You Need
- Seven or more years as an operational SQL Server DBA at enterprise scale — running production systems, not only database development.
- Always On availability groups, design and configuration
- Real troubleshooting depth with Extended Events, Query Store, Performance Monitor, and dynamic management views.
- T-SQL administrative scripting, maintenance strategy, index, and query tuning.
- PowerShell scripting and automation.
- Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and the writing to match. You will be in front of clients, including the ones who are unhappy, where the reply you send is the difference between a saved relationship and a lost one.
- Discipline inside a ticketing and time-tracking system. Clean records, honest hours, notes a colleague can pick up cold. In a consultancy this is not administrative overhead; it is how the work gets paid for.
Things that Will Help
- Active Directory authentication and authorization, and the infrastructure under the database — networking, storage, Windows Server.
- SSIS, SSAS, or SSRS administration.
- Azure SQL, Managed Instance, AWS RDS, and infrastructure as code.
- Data replication and log shipping
- Data compression on tables and indexes.
- Hands-on experience with a specific SQL Server monitoring or observability platform.
- Building tooling beyond scripts — talking to vendor APIs, wiring systems together, automating the parts of the job that should not be manual. We invest in our own tooling and expect people to use and extend it.
- ITSM process depth: formal change, incident, and request management.
- Consulting or managed-services background, carrying several clients at once.
