PASS 2012 Winter Performance Palooza

Randy Knight, President and Principal Consultant at SQL Solutions Group and a Microsoft Certified Master, presented at the PASS 2012 Winter Performance Palooza on Dec. 6.

His topic was “Understanding Transaction Isolation Levels

Transaction isolation levels are one of the most important but least understood areas of SQL Server. SQL Server offers several isolation levels beyond the default READ COMMITTED, but figuring out when to use each one can be daunting.

Whether you are a developer who needs to understand how isolation works and why NOLOCK is usually not an appropriate hint or a seasoned DBA who needs to understand the less commonly used isolation methods, this session is for you. We will look at each isolation level and how it impacts the engine, then examine appropriate (and inappropriate) use cases for each.
